Woodland Santa – creating texture with tone on tone colours

I used to have a blogger blog back when I made cards, and it was very simple and straightforward back in the day. This WordPress blog looks a little better but it’s a bit of a handling because up until now I was only able to write posts on the desktop computer. Today I’m testing out the phone app, so I can blog from wherever I am and fingers crossed this will let me post more frequently.
I’m working on a cross stitch sample for my Etsy store, this is my Woodland Santa, and while I’m not quite finished yet, it’s well underway.
When I was designing this cross stitch piece I took a little time to build in some patterns within the solid colours. I used two or sometimes 3 shades of the one colour to add some patterning to the jacket, sleeves, trousers and reindeer. I did that because I wanted a textural look to the piece, and that’s turning out really well. What I didn’t realise though was that it would make the stitching up go a lot quicker and much more fun! That’s been an unexpected surprise.

At the moment I’ve got as far as the little checkerboard pattern in the trousers, and the stitching is going super fast. I am so going to do this again!
This is what this chart will look like when it’s all finished up, and if you fancy a look at it on other colours, I have some visuals up in my Etsy store. See the listing by clicking here
I used tan coloured aida fabric and DMC threads.
Ta for popping in.
